Physical Characteristics. Brevard County is halfway down Florida's east coast and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Volusia, Orange, Osceola, and Indian River counties. The county has 995.41 square miles of land and 299.00 square miles of water for a total of 1294.41 square miles. The average January temperature is 68.6 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average August temperature is 82.0 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual rainfall is 65.19 inches.
History. Brevard County was established in 1844 from a portion of Mosquito County and was originally named St. Lucie. In 1855 the name was changed in honor of Theodore Washington Brevard (1804-77) of North Carolina. Brevard came to Florida in 1847 and became the state comptroller. Until the space race and the development of Cape Canaveral, Brevard County was a relatively sparsely populated area with fine beaches.
